Charles Mingus- The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady
This is another one of those cases of if you don’t know it, you should. Charles Mingus was a rageaholic motherfucker and it comes off on this 1963 masterpiece. Mingus was prone to ill-tempered outbursts on and off stage. These songs play like a pressure cooker. Before you sit down with this one, I’ll leave you with a quote from a live performance in which Charlie Parker’s drunken, mentally ill body had to be escorted off stage. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is not jazz; these are very sick men.”
Sick men indeed.
